Innovation and research are essential to guide Europe out of the economic crisis. This is why the Committee of the Regions, the S3 Platform, the Province of Utrecht and the Helsinki-Uusimaa and Valencia regions organised a bench-learning Conference in Brussels (Belgium) for pioneering innovation regions, on the 18th of June.

One of the conclusions of the Conference is that cooperation among regions and cities is not natural in the EU and it is seen as distant in terms of time and space. It has also been highlighted that it is difficult to choose the appropriate partners and that the current specialisation strategies are not realistic.

The organisers have developed the Meshmoon Virtual Environment, an interactive participatory platform for regions and cities to explore collaboration methodologies and thematic areas directly relevant to ‘Smart Specialisation Strategies’ (RIS3) partnering.
